Politics in Terrorist Attack
India on 26th November, 2008 (Thursday) faced its bloodiest suicide squad attack. The series of attacks in South Mumbai unfolded into hostage crisis. As the Army, navy and national security guards engaged the militants in a gunbattle, the death count rose to 160 and the number of injured to around 400.
Hemant Karkare, head of the anti-terrorism squad (ATS), was known as a gentleman. A no-nonsense, soft spoken policeman, was a tight lipped intelligence man who was secular to the core and was known to have no enemies. That was partly why he was considered the best man for the tough task of heading the ATS.
Karkare died after the terrorists shot him three times in his chest and waist as he was outside the cama hospital. He laid down his life fighting terrorists from the front. Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi arrived in Mumbai to pay his last respects to senior police officers killed while fighting the terrorists who attacked India's financial capital. Modi also announced Rs 1 crore compensation to the family of terror victims. There are reports that Hemant Karkare’s wife refused compensation offered by Narendra Modi which proved to be a big blow.
India's political parties have swooped down on the tragedy to score points vis-a-vis their political rivals and consolidate their vote banks. It is not just laws, that will prevent attacks but the political will to prevent them. And the political will is often not there because politicians are constantly eyeing their vote banks even when decisions related to national security need to be made. With terrorism in India increasingly taking on an Indian face, India will need to focus on setting its house in order. Its politicians will have to stop playing politics with terrorism.

AWAKENED ?? OR STILL IN SLUMBER ??
The 59 hour terror strike on the Indian Business Capital - Mumbai has shocked and horrified not just Indians but also has left a huge impact on the world population. Terrorism, in the last decade, has spread its wings to most of the nations and are now not just limited to India, Chechnya, Sri lanka and Bangladesh. There have been numerous awakening calls or attacks but its really depressing that after every terrorist attack we get back to our normal lives just within a few hours after lighting candles either outside our homes or at India gate.
This time, lets all stop marching and protesting against such heinous acts and rather gear up to fight terrorism.
Why do we have to blame the government for everything that happens? Aren't we also at fault somewhere. This time lets just not play politics and play the blame game. It is we who choose our representatives in the government. It is high time that we equip ourselves on our own and fight terrorism at grass root level itself.
- We must, as responsible global citizens not just Indian citizens, keep all our eyes and ears open.
- We must have some kind of Disaster Mangement, Crisis Management, etc classes in the schools itself so that our next generation can be well prepared to stop, avoid or face any kind of crisis.
- We must co-ordinate with the defence forces at the time of crisis and not be demanding.
- Suspicious incidents, articles and people must be immediately reported to the nearest police station.
- Employers must thoroughly verify the employees identity.
Remember and do not forget whatever happened in Mumbai. We must start fight against Terrorism on an individual level and then proceed further. "Mumbai fighting spirit" must now be converted into "Mumbai's Anti-Terror Fight".

STUNNED!!
Mumbai terror attacks that lasted for about 60 hours has left me in deep shock. I was speechless and didn't really understand how to react to such a terrible situation. When it started on the night of 26th November I presumed things would be normal in a few hours but I was horrified to see the television news the next morning. This time it was a real long wait. It was completely unbelievable and will definately take a very long time to heal. It was insane and scary. These terrorists need medical attention. They must be treated for their diseased minds, who can take such horrifying tasks.
I appeal to all my fellow beings....This is no time to blame the system or any particular political party. We must stand united alongwith our security forces and put an end to "TERRORISM". Lets all get together and unroot the problems.
Whatever happened in Mumbai was not heart-breaking but heart-paining. We must stop being ignorant. It is time that "WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA" get up and answer back to these sick minded terrorists. Do not sit back at your homes and keep cribbing. There is lot to do. Lets come together and not be sacred. The terrorists must be defeated just the way they have been in Mumbai by our security forces.
I salute to all police officers and NSG Commandos who are the real heroes of the "Bollywood City", Mumbai. My heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones.
At the end, I would just say that iam really very proud to have been born in India, a nation of fighters and its my firm belief that very soon we will
eradicate "TERRORISM" from our holyland.

WOMEN SAFETY
Over the last few years , the issue of Women's safety has become a major focus of public attention and concern. Women face high levels of violence. They are certainly unsafe on streets, running the daily risk of harassment, attack, assault, rape and murder. The traditional approach to women's safety is based on restrictions and fear. Women are told to stay away from places and situations that are potentially violent, to avoid public spaces and stay at home as much as possible, not to go out at night, not to travel alone, not to protest if someone misbehaves with them and so on.This restrictive approach does not really make women safer - if anything, it increases their vulnerability by forcing them to live in fear and creating the feeling in their minds of being helpless victim. Violence against women is not just a women's concern. Women's safety and security cannot be ensured through the efforts of women's organisation alone, no matter how committed or active they are. We believe that making women safer will have beneficial consequences for all citizens, and can happen only through partnerships between women and women's organisations, citizen's groups and community organisations, the police and law enforcement agencies, the administration and elected representatives. Discussions on women's safety must therefore begin from the recognition of women's right to a life free of violence. From this perspective , the responsibility for preventing violence and making women feel secure lies with society as a whole, not with women alone.
Although efforts have been taken to improve the status of women, the constitutional dream of gender equality is miles away from becoming a reality. The dominant tendencies have always been to confine women and women's issues in the private domain.

Get set to face the WINTERS!!
5 habits to help you face the winters
EAT WELL: winter is the perfect time to nourish yourself.this is because as the intake of the food increases, the body burns more energy in an attempt to keep you warm. The best way is to keep away from junk and oily food and binge on curries and chillies as they both fill you and keep you warm.
Increase the intake of Vitamins : vitamin C is present in fruits like amla, oranges, lime and lemons, which fights infection by enhancing the immune system. Vitamin A is present in carrots and papaya which you can relish under the sunlight and protect your skin as well. Vitamin prevents dry skin and wrinkles.
Exercise: the best way to keep yourself healthy is to eat hard but exercise harder. Regular exercise in winters improves the blood circulation, works up your muscles and keeps you warm.
Avoid excessive heat: any kind of direct exposure to cold air or to direct heat dries up your skin. Limit the use of open electric heaters and extremely hot water which dehydrates the skin.
Keep yourself hydrated: last but not the least drink at least 8 glasses of water to keep up your metabolism. Instead of regular tea and coffee, switch over to green tea that is rich in antioxidants.

Good advice may be given but not good manners.
Rebuke not an elder but treat him as a father.
It is difficult, but courage exerts itself in difficulties.
To speak kindly does not hurt the tongue.
Each man should bear his own discomforts rather than abridge the comforts of another man.
We are all born equal and are distinguished alone by virtue.
From another's evil qualities a wise man corrects his own.
One man's right is another man's duty.
Rights and duties are two sides of the same coin.
If anyone should not work neither should he eat.
All your strengTH is in your union, all your danger is in discord.
He who does not know how to grant a favour has no right to seek one.
To labour is to pray.
An angry man opens his mouth and shuts up his eyes.
Evil often triumphs, but never conquers.
Perfection walks slowly, she requires the hand of time.
Be not the first to quarrel, nor the last to make up.
A healthy conscience is like a wall of brass.

Tata Nano: The World’s Cheapest Car
Tata Nano is a proposed city car - a small, affordable, rear-engined, four-passenger car aimed primarily at the Indian market - first presented by India's Tata Motors. Car Name "Nano" was chosen as it denotes high technology and small size. It's a car that has made history. On January 10, 2008 while a select few thousand watched the unveiling of the Nano, a million more around the world saw it on the internet or read about it in newspapers the next day; and it continues to make headlines.
Tata targets the vehicle as the least expensive production car in the world-aiming for a starting price of 100,000 rupees or approximately $2300 US despite rapidly rising material prices.
Newsweek identifies the Nano as a part of a "new breed of 21st-century cars" that embody "a contrarian philosophy of smaller, lighter, cheaper" and portend a new era in inexpensive personal transportation - and potentially, "global gridlock"
For decades, Tata Motors has been India's largest commercial vehicle maker the Tata logo appears on buses, dump trucks, ambulances and cement mixers. Sturdy as elephants, they are a fixture of the Indian landscape. The Nano will be launched in India later in 2008. The car will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. Both versions will offer a wide range of body colours, and other accessories so that the car can be customised to an individual's preferences. It is unlikely to be sold in the U.S. But it wouldn't be aimed only at India, either. Bottom-of-the-pyramid markets would be the best fit : places like Africa, Southeast Asia and maybe eastern Europe and Latin America, wherever income levels mirror India's.
There is a lot riding on its small wheels. It would herald the emergence of Tata Motors on the global auto scene, mark the advent of India as a global center for small-car production and represent a victory for those who advocate making cheap goods for potential customers at the "bottom of the pyramid" in emerging markets. Most of all, it would give millions of people now relegated to lesser means of transportation the chance to drive cars.
The introduction of the Nano received media attention due to it's targeted low price. The car is expected to boost the Indian Economy, create entrepreneurial-opportunities across India, as well as expand the Indian car market by 65%. The car envisioned by, Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group and Tata Motors, described it as an eco-friendly "people's car". Nano has been greatly appreciated by many sources and the media for its low-cost and eco-friendly initiatives which include using compressed-air as fuel and an electric-version (E-Nano).
No doubt, it is too early in the day to comment about its safety standards and environmental consequences, the car will stand up to the Tata repute of providing mobility with safety and an efficient mean of transport to match the requirements of a small middle class Indian family whose aspirations have been growing at a 'never before seen' pace to posses mobility, enhanced status and rise in self-esteem. Tata Nano will definitely set up a trend of the sort and debut a manufacturing era of low cost and eco friendly automobiles.
For now, Tata's Nano car has truly taken millions on 'the flight to fancy'!

Always test the makeup a few weeks before your wedding day so that no allergy spoils your big day. And nothing in this world can outdo a lovely smile, so keep smiling and see your skin glow!

BPO's PROS & CONS
PROS & CONS of BPO:
The BPO culture in India has always been under controversies of all sorts, be it their shift timings, lifestyle of their employees, cab accidents etc. Recently the famous author Chetan Bhagat exposed the different sides of the business with his book “One Night @ the Call Centre”.
Although the so called CONS of the BPO’s can’t be ignored but lets just not forget that nothing is perfect and even before the coming up of this sector in India, the media industry, the hospitality sector, medical industry etc followed the same kind of work culture.
The PROS of the BPO’s leave everything far behind. We cannot ignore the fact that India’s GDP has witnessed tremendous increase due to this outsourcing companies. This industry has been a major factor in solving the huge employment problem that a developing nation like India faces. The employee benefits, compensation, work environment, career growth prospects, working conditions etc are undoubtedly the best. It is one of the only few sectors which not only encourage but even fund their employees’ for further studies. They have tie-ups with educational institutions for the employees. The satisfaction rate of the employees has increased significantly due to various factors and has the industry has proved its worthiness with its work. In conclusion we can say that BPO’s are a big boon for the Indian economy

Visual Merchandising : "Silent salesman for a retail store"
Visual merchandising is largely associated with creating the look of the store. In other words, it is one of the final stages in trying to set out a store in a way that customers will find attractive and appealing. It is the art of presentation, which puts the merchandise in focus and in perspective too. It educates the customers, creates desire and finally augments the selling process.VM and Displays have a storyboard effect communicating innovatively to the customer besides being a "Silent salesman for a retail store". It sets the context of the merchandise in an aesthetically pleasing fashion, presenting them in a way that would convert the window shoppers into prospects and ultimately buyers of the product.
Many elements can be used by visual merchandisers in creating displays, including colour, lighting, space, product information, sensory inputs such as smell, touch, and sound as well as technologies such as digital displays and interactive installations.
Especially in todays challenging economy, people may avoid visual merchandisers because they fear unmanageable costs. But in reality, visual merchandisers can help economise by avoiding costly mistakes. With guidance of a professional, retailer can eliminate errors, thereby saving time and money. It is important to understand that the visual merchandiser is there, not to impose ideas, but to help clients articulate their own personal style.VM uses season based displays to introduce new arrivals to customers, and thus increase conversions through a planned and systematic approach by displaying stocks available. However, recently visual merchandising has gained in importance as a quick and cost effective way to revamp retail stores.

What is Retail?
Retail is the final stage of any economic activity. Any organisation selling to final consumers whether it is a manufacturer, wholesaler or retailer- is doing retailing. Retailing thus may be understood as the final step in the distribution of merchandise, for consumption by the end consumers. A retailer is a dealer or a trader who sells goods in small quantities. The origins of retail can be traced back to barter trade. Various formats have evolved over the years and have been influenced by social and economic developments of the era. Retailers today, are no longer dependent on manufacturers to sell what is available, but have emerged as the new leaders in the marketing channel. Retail occupies an important place in the world economy. In the complex world of trade today, retail includes not only goods but also services, which are provided to the end consumer.Retailing by its very nature, is a dynamic industry.
Indian Daredevils

DAREDEVIL DRIVERS ON THE INDIAN ROADS
Here are a few survival tips for all those daring people who want to escape from the devils on the Indian roads!!!
1) Do not think that honking is an insult to others! How the hell do you think that you can make those stray dogs & cows move from the middle of the main road!!!!
2) Abusing while driving is perfectly fine.... the idiots driving their cars & bikes (purely chivalrous act!) while talking or even messaging on their mobile phones really need those loving words!
3) In most foreign nations the Pedestrian is the King..... but you dare not follow the same rule in India and if you still wish to then don't blame us when someone bumps your priced asset in the back!!
4) There is no such rule as - Overtake only from the right. If you still wanna abide by the same then just be prepared to reach your destination 2 hours late.
5) Better watch out for those Bloody Bikers (who are always ready to shed their blood with their zigzag game on the roads)!!
6) "Entry only" & "One Way" are terms only meant for displa. Who cares? or should we say -- Who folllows???
7) Don't think & drive, rather just pray & drive. Leave it all to your God!
8) Do not take the traffic signals for granted!! If your signal turns green then that doesn't mean the opposite signal is red.. , it will turn red only when you start invading the road.... so get set and GO!!

Empires of the Indus
BOOK REVIEW
Book- EMPIRES OF THE INDUS
Author- Alice Albinia
Pages- 336
Price- Rs 550
Publisher- John Murray Hachette India
A beautifully written book by Albinia, with in depth detail to each aspect, is bound to change the mindset of millions sitting acroos the borders on all sides of the Indian sub continent and other Asians. The author really did her homework well before writing this extraordinarily magnificent story.
The Indus valley civilization that was founded more than 3000 years Before Christ, has been forgotten by its very own people and this foreigner Albibia does a splendid job in reminding us about the world's oldest civilization. The Indus river flows across four huge nations of the Asian continent presently who cannot see eye to eye with each other, China, Tibet, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The whole story has been written in a very captivating and enthralling manner.
Albinia travelled all through the river, from its mouth to its source, to explore the known and the unknown while risking her life in the terror prone areas of Xingjiang, Pakistan, Kashmir and Afghanistan. The most dangerous part of her journey was when she trekked from Mount kaisasg to the source of the Indus.
It seems like now she can even write a whole new book about her entire overland journey to Pakistan from London via Brussels, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Moscow, Kazakhastan, Urumqi (China), Kashgar and finally to Delhi via Amritsar.

Obama's call to the Indian PM

So finally!!!!!!!!
India got that long awaited call... you know very well what I mean right??!!
The new American President or rather say THE WORLD's PRESIDENT (because lets not just forget that the whole world has come crashing down with the collapse of a few American Banks, most of the people around us are jobless or say salary-less!!), finally spoke to our strong 'Turban-man". As per the reports it was a 10 minute coversation between the two gentlemen and one can rather easily guess what all could have been discussed in such a long span of time (pleasantries must not have taken place!). The Indo-US nuclear deal, recession, Terrorism, Trade, Outsourcing ..... what was discussed?? U keep guessing...
Obama: Hey MAN!!
Manmohan Singh: OYE teri MAA ki jai!! kaun hai tu?
Obama: Hey this is not oye maa, I am OBAMA
Manmohan: Oh! I am sorry. Heartiest Congratulations to you Mr. President!
Obama: Thank you MAN. How do you do?
Manmohan: Sonia ji is fine and so am I. How about you sir?
Obama: I apologise for being able to speak to you after so long time but it seems you were busy, what kept you occupied?
Manmohan: Oh sir ji! wo Sonia ji...
Obama: Hey, I must say that you really love your wife Sonia very much!
Manmohan: No sir,Sonia ji is our party President.
Obama: What are you saying? We all Americans thought that Sonia is your wife's name. so what is your wife's name?
Manmohan: (After thinking for very long) Her name is .... (Again thinking) Mrs. Manmohan Singh!!!

BOOK REVIEW
TITLE: Difficult Daughters
AUTHOR: Manju Kapur
PUBLISHER: Penguin
PRICE: Rs.250
CATEGORY: Fiction
As the title suggests, the story is about ‘difficult’ daughters who want to embark on a new path. It beautifully presents the relationship of a mother and a daughter and shows how the equation between the two changes as the daughter grows up.The book is set around the Partition time (1947) in Lahore and Amritsar.
The beginning of the story is quite riveting, with a daughter trying to understand her mother, after her mother expired. But soon the focus of the novel shifts towards the life of the mother-Virmati, the lead protagonist, who is torn between her family (marrying the ‘ideal’ man of her own ‘samaj’), her desire for education and her love for a married man- the professor. The story is an extraordinary blend of personal and professional aspirations of a woman. The India-Pakistan partition has been very cleverly used to make it look like a plot of the story. The story gains momentum as Virmati gets into a scandalous relationship with her married neighbour, the Professor. Their relationship parallels with India’s battle for freedom. The book offers not just a love story to its readers.
This well researched book comprises of numerous facts about the Partition era, thus making the story more realistic. The lives of a Punjabi family in Amritsar has been described in a very picturesque manner making it more interesting to read.
The Professor’s character is a bit feeble in comparison with Virmati’s character, she had the audacity to defy her family and the society.
Through its different characters the story has also exhibited the evolution of a women’s status in the society.
The author has successfully managed to draw attention towards social issues like education for women, women empowerment and child marriage which were dominant aspects of the society at that time and still prevails.
The author has done a commendable job in conveying the story by using simple yet effective words without compromising on the strong impact of the storyline.
Note: Manju Kapur is an English professor at Miranda House, Delhi University. Difficult Daughters is her first attempt and has received the Commonwealth Award for the Eurasian region. It is partially based on her mother ‘Virmati’ (whose photograph along with her father’s photograph is on the book cover).
